GPPi presents “Raising the bar” results to VENRO working group
GPPi Project Manager Andrea Binder and Research Associate Kai Koddenbrock conducted a presentation to the working group on humanitarian assistance of VENRO (Verband Deutscher Entwicklungspolitischer Nicht-Regierungsorganisationen), the umbrella organization of German development NGOs, about the results of the Global Public Policy Institute’s research and dialogue program entitled “Raising the bar: Enhancing transatlantic governance of disaster response and preparedness” conducted in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Transatlantic Relations.
Focusing on the results of the two study groups on “The implementing of lessons learned” and “Linking, relief, rehabilitation and development” (LRRD), Andrea Binder and Kai Koddenbrock showed how the United States Government and the European Commission as humanitarian donors deal with the challenges of internal policy development and operational independence in the field. In the context of LRRD they described how both donors are struggling with the dilemma of staying true to the humanitarian principles of independence, neutrality, impartiality and humanity while being asked to contribute to more transformative assistance approaches.
The briefing is part of a number of dissemination events during the final phase of the “Raising the bar” research and debate program that is soon to close with the publication of an edited volume, an action paper and several policy papers.
More information on the research program and its outputs can be found at www.disastergovernance.net
