GPPi holds 3rd Transatlantic Dialogue on Humanitarian Action in Brussels
GPPi held the 3rd Transatlantic Dialogue on Humanitarian Action (TDHA) on 8 June 2009 in Brussels, Belgium. Entitled “Looking Ahead: Addressing current and future challenges in humanitarian assistance” this dialogue was conducted in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Transatlantic Relations, and with support from the European Commission and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The TDHA conferences are part of Global Public Policy Institute’s research and dialogue program entitled “Raising the bar: Enhancing transatlantic governance of disaster response and preparedness” conducted in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Transatlantic Relations. More information on the research program can be found at www.disastergovernance.net.
This conference was the final dialogue session of the “Raising the Bar” project. Participants examined critical challenges facing the humanitarian sector including: tensions between maintaining the humanitarian space and addressing the root causes of humanitarian problems; the role of the financial crisis in worsening or creating new humanitarian emergencies; and humanitarian assistance as a mechanism for engaging regional powers.
